Project Square Narutowicza in Warsaw

A city square of supralocal significance accessible without any restrictions, taking into account the disabled. As part of the removal of terrain barriers, it was decided to align the square's floor plane, resigning from the height differentiation in the pavement-roadway system (floor on one level). The surfaces used on the square allow free and safe movement of all groups of users. The area of controlled accessibility in a sense is the tram track (zone 2 and the lane in st. Filtrowa) secured with protective barriers.

Composition

The area of the study consists of two parts, related in terms of composition, but significantly different in terms of dynamics - the function of space and saturation with program and natural elements:

  • part A communicative - dynamic, intensely connected, multifunctional space;
  • part B recreational - a more static space - quiet, harmonized, where the main material remains vegetation, constituting the basic element of the structure.

When planning the square space, the overriding principle of rigorous shaping of the representative space (subdued form, regular layout) was followed. The detailed composition refers to the style of modernism.

The basis of the composition was the recreation of the historic radial layout of streets and compositional axes, closely related to the layout of the surrounding pre-war buildings. The main axes were formally extended, consistently emphasizing them with a sensory continuation in the form of a strip in a characteristic surface (made of Warsaw red granite paving stones) practically throughout the entire course. In line with the pre-war state, the rectilinear route of ul. Filtrowa. This allowed for the identification of an additional small plant enclave, which effectively emphasized the outline of the arched corner of the historic building. For functional reasons, it was decided to move the eastern lane of ul. Gr & oacute; jecka, thus obtaining a clear separation of the zone with intense traffic and enlargement of the recreational space with dominant vegetation. Tall vegetation is arranged in compact cubic forms, which constitute a visual continuation and emphasize the characteristic form of the neighboring architecture. This part of the square is counterbalanced by a central luminous zone with freely arranged groups of trees. This gives the comfort of choosing a place to rest - in the shade under the eaves of trees (divine) or in a sunny space (central part of the square). A new, visually important spatial element of the square is the exposed grass tram tracks, left in the current course.
